Question by Ashley pagano: Why did my dog eat his own poop?
I have an 8 year old labrador who has lymphoma. He is on prednisone along with weekly chemo.
I caught his outside digging up something in the snow. He was so preoccupied with trying to get it he didn’t even hear me come out. when i got to him, he had a hard cold piece of poop in his mouth.
The vet said that the prednisone would make him thirsty and hungry, which he is. I have to fill up his water bowl at least 4 times a day and he runs when he hears the refrigerator opens and begs for food all the time.
Could he be eating poop because he is just hungry or is it something more?
this is the first time he has ever done this since he was around 5 months

Answer by Julissa Many will describe dogs eating their poop (aka coprophagy) as natural behavior but it’s still a disgusting habit with possible health implications for you or your pet.
Worms or disease can be spread when dogs eat the feces of other dogs. Feces of other dogs or animals may also contain fly larvae, fungus, or intestinal parasites. Also consider that many people let their dogs lick them on the face! Or even their children! And who wants to get a face full of poopy dog breath! As with most dog behavioral problems, the sooner you curb your dogs bad habit, the better. The longer you allow this filthy practice to continue, the harder it is to put a stop to it.
Bitches with a new litter of puppies may eat puppy droppings to keep the area clean. In the wild this can hide the presence of her puppies from predator animals. Puppies may see their mother doing this and copy the behaviour.

Question by j<3: How to cope with dying dog?
I have a 13 year old chihuahua and she has been a part of my family ever since I can remember. She was diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma last May. We chose not to go through with chemotherapy considering her age and we feared it would give her more health problems. She has been in pretty good heatlh since then, but has lost a few pounds. She was eating normally up until last week but now she barely eats anything. My mom told me she just lays wherever and has no energy to move around. This hurts me so badly and I am away at college right now so I can’t even see her. I don’t know what to do…. I have cried my eyes out so many times since the diagnosis happend, I feel like I don’t have anymore tears left. What do I do? I know I have to say goodbye someday, but I don’t want to yet. (((( Please help me. How do I cope with my dying dog who I can’t even see right now.

Michael Bryant enacted Bill 132 August 29, 2005. The battle continues to repeal this senseless law that is resulting in the slaughter or our canine friends. Someone must stand for them, march for them, speak for them and defend them. So the battle contines…. We are a “Band of Brothers”. We are in the trenches of a battle against BSL. We “soldier” on fighting for our rights & our family friendly dogs lives. We battle against the erosion of the Canadian Charter of Rights & Freedoms. We do not believe that Michael Bryant had the mandate to subject us, based only on our dog’s looks and a “whipped vote”, to search & seizure without a warrant. We know if racial profiling is wrong, then so is canine profiling. We fight against discrimination based only on looks, not on disposition or temperament. We fight that we, as dog owners, are now automatically guilty in a court of law & must now, for the first time in Canadian history, prove ourselves innocent. We are a “Band of Brothers” soldiering on against this discrimination and prejudice. Italy now at 93 banned or restricted dogs. We are in the front lines for all dogs as this cancer continues to grow from a lack of knowledge and intelligence. We are FOR responsible dog ownership. Say NO to BSL
Question by I have ideas…: Swollen lymph nodes in our dog?
We have a vet appointment today for our dog, he has swollen lymph nodes in his neck and back legs. He’s 9 years old. He goes to the vet often (every 2-4 weeks) for Adequan shots for arthritis. Other than that he appears fairly healthy – he did have a couple of days last week where his appetite wasn’t up to par, he still ate – but not like normal. He’s eating fine now. About once a day I notice him ‘cough’ for lack of a better word – but it’s not much. What are the chances that this is lymphoma? It came about rather quickly. We’ll find out soon, it’s just stressing me out.

Question by tate064: Has anyone ever experienced with their dog the symptoms described below? If yes, how and what happened?
I have a seven year old Brittany. She has always been very healthy. However, over the last month or so, she has stopped eating her normal dry kibble, and increased her water intake quite a bit. She’s gone from 38 to 28 lbs, and we can now see her backbone, hips, and ribs more clearly, not to mention that she barks much less frequently. We took her to the vet for testing: her urine, fecal, and blood testing all came out normal, with the exception of a higher white blood cell count in her liver. We also did chest x-rays, and found nothing unusual. To get her to eat, we now have to use cold, soft food (cheese, hamburger, moist dog food, etc), sit on the floor with her, and convince her to eat. She is on antibiotics 3x a day in the event of a bacterial infection, and prednisone steroids if it’s something more serious like lymphoma, as well as to make her hungry. Other than that, she still seems pretty normal in her behaviors…she has never ingested anything she shouldn’t (like chip bags) either. My family kind of suspects her throat is hurting her, so maybe something is wrong there?
The vet said he’s never seen anything quite like this, but I was wondering if maybe someone else had.
