I am in shock, my not quite 6 yr old Doberman had to be put to sleep recently after being diagnosed with bone cancer just 3 weeks prior. It escalated so quickly and he was in such pain. Is this common?

Depends on the breed of dog. Some breeds are very prone to certain types of cancer and others are not. Most larger dogs are more prone to it than smaller dogs.

I’m so sorry for your loss.

Large breed dogs such as Great Danes and Irish Wolfhounds can be prone to a bone cancer called osteosarcoma. Osteosarcoma is the most common bone tumor is dogs. It is believed to be related to breed size and how fast the dog grows. Since large breed dogs tend to grow faster then other breeds they are more prone to this then smaller breeds. Long-term prognosis is usually poor in regards to treatment And most treatments involve amputation of the infected leg and chemotherapy.

Not sure how common but you have my sympathy, it is so hard to lose a faithful pet. My husband’s daughter just found out her dog has bone cancer and he has 3-6 months to live. They get a lot of things people get, so do cats. I’m sorry you lost your pet.
