Question by Lucidia: A few questions about crate training.?
Hello,
I have had a conversation with my vet about crate training which left me a few questions.

1. Why do so many people insist crate training is important and necessary? What advantages does a crate trained dog gain which can not be gained by simply making the house dog proof and making sure that the dog will not be alone more than 3-4 hours at a time.

2. I asked me vet about medical pros and cons for crate training. His answer was that forcing a dog to hold his bladder and bowl movements can cause basically the same medical conditions as it would in a human. Including UTI, bladder cancer, bowl obstructions and so on.
He also said that keeping a dog confined to small crate over an regular bases could causes other issues such as thromboses, embolisms and problems with the development of the bones.
He could not name any medical advantage.
How can you prevent these problems from occurring?

3. My vet also said that keeping a dog locked away in a crate can cause a number of psychological issues such as: aggressive and/or destructive behavior, nervousness, anxiety and nervous ticks.
How hard would it be to “fix” those problems once they occur? Can these issues be cure by a trainer and if yes how much time/money would this cost?

3. I always read here questions such as “I crate my dog 8 hours a day and he pees/poops in the crate, how do i stop it?” Followed by answers such as: “Get a smaller crate.”
What is the reasoning behind getting a smaller crate? Is it because th dog will be forced to sit in it if he can’t hold it any longer? A form of punishment?
@ Mary J:
“You vet does understand crate training and is stupid.”
“..we have removed the dore ..”
Please don’t call anyone stupid. Come back when you can actually contribute without name calling…and after you took some english lesson.

Anyone who crates their dog for 8 hours a day is cruel and maybe should have got a rabbit instead of a dog.

I have crates and the dogs love them but the doors of the crates are never closed. They will go into their crates of their own accord for a nap.

I used the crates to facilitate house training. If the pup did not oblige when I took it outside every hour I put pop it in the crate for 10-15 minutes and then take it outside again. I would never use crates as a confinement system, only as a training aid.

Question by : I’m worried about my anger management issues and I don’t know what to do? Please help?
I’m a 15 year old girl, and I think I have anger management issues and I’m worried. I always do stupid stuff like this:

My friend insulted my father once in front of my face, and it upset me so i got a saw and started violently sawing this one tree in the park down and ripping up the leaves off and stuff. my friend saw me and told me I have anger problems. Also, when my uncle passed away I punched a wall really hard and I had to go to hospital because I had fractured my knuckle bone or something. And when my sports instructor found out he had cancer I punched a hole through a door. Another time, I smashed a glass window because my sister was hurting my dog (she’s 8 and she didn’t realize what she was doing) and she was laughing and wouldn’t stop when I told her to.

Its weird because I’m rarely affected by what people think of ME. If they insult ME, I don’t care. I usually get this build-up of anger when I feel like my friends/family are at risk.

Well, I live next to the river, so I used to use rowing as a sport in which I could unleash all my emotions. Like, every time I felt the need to punch something, I would go out on the water and row until I wanted to die. Literally. Once my dad had to call the ambulance because I collapsed due to over working myself when I went rowing. Ever since I collapsed my father banned me from rowing, but I still do it occasionally when times are really bad, but he thinks I quit ages ago. And since I’ve stopped rowing as much as I did before, I’ve started smashing up things, its really bad… and I honestly try so hard to stop myself but I just can’t.

I never inflict pain on anybody. I don’t even shout at anyone, its just that all this anger builds up inside me all at once and I have to let it out on something, even if it means destroying things. I don’t just smash up any old object, I usually run as far as I can until I run out of breath and then I unleash all this anger. I don’t know what to do.. I’ve been told that I need to sort myself out.

Talk to your parents about getting counseling from a psychiatrist. It’s unlikely that you will be able to “sort yourself out” because it usually takes someone who is not emotionally involved to find the root cause.

That said, techniques such as meditation, misogi, and chinkon can sometimes help.

Question by : Do I have serious anger problems? I’m not sure what to do about this?
I’m a 15 year old girl, and I mean, I’ve been told that I’ve got anger problems, but I don’t see it as that..

My friend insulted my father once in front of my face. I think it was meant as a joke but I took it seriously. therapy, figuring out how to channel your anger into something positive, not negative. Paint, write, draw, sew, etc.
Do you let out your emotions if you feel sad do you cry, or keep it inside. If you keep it inside, don’t because that is the worst thing you could do. It will all come out and the result is anger.
Also, if you are mad at someone, talk with them instead of keeping them to yourself.
let emotions out the first time you feel them.

Question by : i have a couple questions about parrots?
i just moved in with my mom and her boyfriend has a parrot hes mainly blue with yellow and green on his head. i noticed hes constantly biting himself, scratching himself and making like whining noises… a couple spots of feathers are falling out and he has a one little bald spot on his tummy. my moms boyfriend has cancer and hes quite old with no job….he cant afford to take Oliver to the doctors. I really dont think he thinks anything is wrong with him….is it just molting since its colder out? or is there something wrong with him. Oh and he feeds oliver dog treats….mostly milk bones but sometimes these little jerky strip things. i dnt wanna criticize him on how to raise his bird because im only 14. BUT im in love with animals and i hate to see this poor bird suffering with his itchiness. even tho he is quite mean haha. OH and one more question….what are some good treats to feed him because hes only fed at dinner time and id like to sneak him a treat when he says “hungry”
he has a couple toys tht he always bites and plays with lol. andd no not human food, idk where they keep the bird food so i culdnt tell u what they feed him but i looked at the bottom of the cage and there is peanuts, seeds and pellets. since i moved in 3 days ago ive been giving him fresh water and i just cleaned out his cage today….and at dinner time i meaant to say he has his food dish filled with normal parrots foods….i really do not like seeing him scratch and bite himself so i will put more healthy treats on the grocery list and try to convince them what not to feed him. i just feel akward telling him how to raise his parrot because i dont know him that well….but for the sake of Oliver i will try my hardest. thankss guys.

Answer by Kevin Bays
As far as treats go, you’ll have to do some experimenting.

Birds don’t really have taste buds, so they select their food based on appearance and texture. Think of a bird’s eye as being in par with a dog’s nose in terms of keenness. For that reason, birds can appear very picky about their food, because they see something that indicates to them it isn’t good.

A good bet would be nuts, fruits, or veggies. Ive had pretty good luck with almonds and red bell peppers before, so you might want to start there.

Make sure the almonds, or any nuts you give to the bird, are raw (no salt or seasoning or anything).

Edit-
Also, based on your description, I’m guessing you have a blue and gold macaw,

Question by : Someone who knows a thing or 2 about selling Pitt bulls?! =)?
I have a blue nose brindle pitt bull that i have to breed and don’t know how much i could sell them for because i have have her papers. She is drop dead gorgeous, people are always wanting to buy her from me for $ 1,000 + but i could never get rid of her cause she’s my baby. She doesn’t have a mean bone in her body, in fact she thinks shes a big baby. She loves to cuddle, well mannered, always happy and quite the character. I never got her papers because i never planned on breeding her but now have to for 2 reasons. #1 she is too beautiful and wonderful to not have more babies and #2 she is having an issue with fake pregnancies and learned that when female dogs have an issue with repeated fake pregnancies if you don’t spade them their change of uterus cancer is quite high, but also learned that some people that had this problem with their Pitt bulls, bred them and then a couple months later their hormones balanced. I would spade her but i want one of her puppies terribly but just don’t quite ready for another one.
The stud is a BEAUTIFUL registered true blue nose Pitt bull which is EXACTLY like Molly (my female Pitt). He acts like a big baby and has the softest kindest natured soul who would never hurt a fly. He has a huge massive head and just overall is 100% perfect in my eyes.
Now i dont want to be greedy and over charge for their pups, but yet i dont want to be practily giving them away neither. How much do you think i should charge for these pups?

Best answer:

Answer by ♦Dalmatian Appreciation♦
I’d say the fee a shelter charges for the adoption of their dogs would do – say $ 100 max.

APBT’s and their mixes are a dime a dozen in shelters and rescues, why on earth would you want to condemn more to euthanasia?

Question by : Anyone know what to do about this?
My father-in-law recently passed away about a week ago. He had bone cancer. It’s long, but let me explain:

About two years ago, he was diagnosed with a different kind of cancer (can’t remember what kind). It was localized in the throat. He went through chemo and radiation, and got rid of it. Then, about 8-10 months ago, he was hospitalized to have a cyst removed from his testicles. When he was leaving the hospital, he fell on his way out. They helped him up and let him go home. He was complaining that he had pain in his arm where he had fallen. He continued to complain of this pain in his arm and there was a noticeable lump there. He went back to the doctor and they ended up telling him that his arm was broken. They did nothing further than telling him it was broken – no cast of any sort, no x-rays, nothing! This arm continued to get worse and worse. Finally, they told him that it was not broken, but that he had arthritis. They sent him for physical therapy. He then started complaining of back pain. He got to the point that he could not walk. He also had a noticeable lump in his lower back. Again, they told him arthritis. Still no testing of any sort. Finally, when he went to a doctors appt. and could not get out of the car because of the pain, they sent him to the hospital. They questioned him and sent him for an MRI (I believe that’s what its called). The doctor came back to tell the family that he had advanced bone cancer and it was at a point that it was not treatable. The doctor said that he believed that it began in the arm that he had “broken.” He had lumps (tumors) in his arm, back, hip, head, and neck. It had also metastasized to his lungs. All that time, he had been telling them about the lumps and pain, and they did NOTHING. He lived for a month after that. My questions are: Shouldn’t they have done more testing? Why were they so nonchalant about his pain? Also, is there anything, legally, that can be done to the doctor that treated him? The family is not interested in money, but they would like for the doctor to have some kind of action taken against him. Is that possible? What would be the process? They spoke with someone about it but they didn’t really understand the process. Whoever they spoke with (I wasn’t there), said that it would be very hard to get anywhere with it because “doctors will stick up for other doctors.” Those were his words. What can be done? Am I correct in thinking that more could have been done? It just seems that it was almost like it’s one of those situations where the dog is sick and Grandpa says, “He’s got the mange, so I’ll just take him out back and shoot em’.” I’m sure that he probably wouldn’t have lived a normal life span, but to just not treat the illness? It seems like willfully withholding medical treatment to me. All info and answers are greatly appreciated.

I do not have any type of experience in this field but just from everyday life experiences i went through a situation similar to yours with my grandpa suffering a stroke with doctors giving us mixed messages about how he was going, unfortunately he passed away and so my parents raised a complaint with the hospital and then called the actual health department that controlled this specific hospital. That’s all i can recommend, speak to someone higher in the chain and alert them to this stupidity and obnoxiousness. Sorry i can’t help you out more buddy, anyways good luck with everything

Question by SSTEPHLALA: My cat has bone cancer and the vets told us he had about a year. It’s been a year and i have some questions?
He recently started growing some kind of other tumor right next to his initial one just much smaller, and it also recently started bleeding. Whenever I try to clean it up with a kleenex of put neosporin on it, he doesn’t like it. Anyways it still keeps bleeding and my cat licks it all the time.. I know that osteosarcoma (bone cancer) is very painful for animals. Do you think it’s time to put him alseep? He’s still pretty active, he runs when he gets his food, and he’s always eating.

Best answer:

Answer by derbbear87
A good measure of quality of life is if the animal is still eating and drinking readily. From what you said, this is the case so I think that I would let your cat continue to live his life. If he’s painful and you don’t have him on pain meds, talk to your vet. In many cases where the patient is on hospice care, they will allow you to get pretty much whatever you want to help him. Anyway, bring up your concern with your vet but if he continues to eat, he’s still feeling pretty good.

Question by tazzmainiandevils: Does anyone know about using natural progesterone cream in dogs to prevent cancer?
I know natural progesterone cream is beneficial to opposing estrogen in mammals during pregnancy. I also know it’s good in preventing all kinds of cancer. If my dog had a couple heats before being fixed, would it be helpful to try supplementing with some natural progesterone for a couple months, to counter act the estrogen she was exposed to? I thought we were going to breed her and I’d never owned a dog before. I feel bad that her risks for cancer is now increased. The vet told me this today, and the dog was spayed two years ago (she’s now 3.5 years old).

Best answer:

Answer by Magen Brown47
If she has been spayed for two years with no problems yet, she should be fine.
