I am so sorry. My GSD died in September 2009 with cancer of the spleen. If your dog has had a op and a biopsy which proves this, she has a problem.

My dog was referred to a specialist when it was suspected that she had a splenetic problem. Before my dog had her op, I told the vet that if it was obvious that she had cancer of the spleen that she should be PTS without waiting for the biopsy results. When I collected my beloved dog, the vet said that he was 99.9% convinced that she had cancer. He allowed her to wake up from the op because he was a charlatan and he wanted to be paid for extensive surgery.

Because I had investigated this on the Internet, I knew that she could have an internal bleed. This happened just eighteen days after her op, her limbs became cold, I took her to my usual vet and she was PTS.

For now, if you feel that you keep her happy, give her several tiny meals a day. Her spleen will have swollen, consequently she cannot cope with large meals. I cooked my dog a variety of things, I just wanted her to eat and I gave her warmed food.

Due to the function of the spleen, cancer can spread very quickly to other organs, that’s why they have internal bleeds. If you think that she is declining and there is evidence of problems. I hope that you will have the strength to end her life. Do this sooner than later if you cannot stay with her for twenty four hours a day.

I am sorry for both you and your dog. Email me if you think that I can help, you have a long hill to climb. Take care

Question by : I think our dog is dying and?
My husband has an 8 year old black lab who started limping in January. We took him to the vet in early April, and he was diagnosed with bone cancer. The vet was a jerk & completely unhelpful, but we did get pain-killers & anti-infllamatories. Our dog started gaining weight and acting like his old self, not in any visible pain at all. All of our vets (went to 3) told us that we would know when our dog was ready to be put down.

Now, within the last week, he has suddenly stopped eating his new dog food, losing a TON of weight, and is limping worse than ever with his limb completely dislocated. Our other dog has started acting weird around him, being very gentle and distant. I can see all of his ribs now, and he looks horrible. I feel terrible for him, but my husband will NOT have him put to sleep. He is saying that the dog simply doesn’t like the food, or he doesn’t want to talk about. He won’t take the dog to the vet and insists on giving him aspirin instead of getting more pain meds.

It is his dog, and we don’t have much money so he keeps insisting that we don’t need to go to the vet. I don’t want to put the dog down without his permission, but I’m feeling really sad seeing the dog dying in front of me. What can I do? I really think we need to put him down.
We don’t have any extra money, but we can afford to have him put down. My husband is VERY attached to this dog. (The dog saved his life three years ago & he feels like he owes the same.) He has the viewpoint that he’d rather suffer than die because you only have one life :-/ I guess I need advice on how to convince him that this is best? He’s going to be really sad when we have to, but I think it’s time.
CT – that’s a really good idea actually. Maybe if I take the dog to the vet with my husband, the vet can convince him how bad the dog’s condition really is.
Treatment plans weren’t a good option with this type of bone cancer. He was given a maximum 6 months to live (but the timeline is usually 3), & this particular bone cancer treatment usually only adds 3 more months of life & is uncomfortable for the dog to go through so we decided to give him a quality life instead of focusing on quantity. He’s had cancer for at least 5 months, so I know when I look at him that his time has run out, & the last vet we took him to said that he had maybe two weeks to a month left (it’s been a little over a month now). So I’m not being negative about it; I just can’t let my husband get his hopes up when we both knew this would happen.

Thanks so much for the advice so far everyone!

U DO need to take him to a vet or put him down, if the dog is in pain its just not right to keep him alive and suffering, it might take time but im sure i the future ur husband will find a new best friend :) Good luck and I’m sorry about your dog ):

Question by al: My dog is dying of cancer and is running a fever. What can I give him to help?
He is very weak and can barely stand. He has gotten up to use the bathroom outside twice today. The vets are closed until tomorrow if he even makes it that long. I would love to give him something to make him more comfortable. We are taking turns sitting with Charlie so he knows he is not alone. He is a lab/pit mix and is 11 years old. He has lost about 20 lbs in the last year. Soooo sad…

Question by Mark P: My dog is dying of cancer and tomorrow I take her to the vet for the last time.?
Tonight we have decided to take our 13 year old dog to the vet in the morning. She has cancer, we found this out in a routine visit about 3 months ago. Her health has steadily declined since then. The tumor is the size of a softball and has wound itself around other vital parts, so surgery is not an option. We were told we would lose her on the table, so we elected to let her live out her last days with us. She no longer can walk and has stopped eating. I have to hold her up to drink and has lost control of her body functions…so it is time for us to allow her to go. This is the hardest thing I have had to do in a long time… Her name is Cali and she has been a tremendous part of our family… We will miss her, but we know we have to let her go…

We too recently suffered a loss from 2 of our dogs that were suffering from cancer. I sincerely feel for you and it is no easy task but when your family member tells you its time to go, you can’t help but listen. There is no easy way…and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Question by j<3: How to cope with dying dog?
I have a 13 year old chihuahua and she has been a part of my family ever since I can remember. She was diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma last May. We chose not to go through with chemotherapy considering her age and we feared it would give her more health problems. She has been in pretty good heatlh since then, but has lost a few pounds. She was eating normally up until last week but now she barely eats anything. My mom told me she just lays wherever and has no energy to move around. This hurts me so badly and I am away at college right now so I can’t even see her. I don’t know what to do…. I have cried my eyes out so many times since the diagnosis happend, I feel like I don’t have anymore tears left. What do I do? I know I have to say goodbye someday, but I don’t want to yet. :( (((( Please help me. How do I cope with my dying dog who I can’t even see right now.

It should not be about you – it should be about the comfort of your treasured companion. The last loving thing we do is release them from pain – that is what needs to happen NOW – not when you are ready.

Question by munchkin: My dog is dying of cancer, what should I do with all her stuff?
She has 1 to 3 months to live and she is completely spoiled with custom sofas, custom dog house, more clothes than I own and not budget clothes either. I do not want to donate to the SPCA but maybe a rescue? Any suggestions as to where I could donate this stuff?

Question by Rachel: Signs of a dying dog?
I have read the signs of a dying dog…. She has some signs but not all…looking for some input

My Choc Lab is 12 ½ years old. Her back hips have been bad for a while now. However, now she has a very hard time going to steps – when she goes up them she hops. She eats just not much (she has lost weight over the past few weeks) Now a 2 quart food bowl full will last her up to 3 to 5 days!! She does drink all the time. She has no bowel/potty problems. She does get confused easy and last week we learned she is 100% deaf. Last night her right shoulder went out from yesterday and today her shoulder has gone out 4 times. This week she also has started panting when the house is cold…she even pants when she has done nothing to make her hot. She also lays in one spot most of her day and today she has been following me around like a lost puppy dog. She even followed me to the bathroom. She had bone cancer a year ago and we amputated her toe… I fear the time is near for our Millie – I really don’t want to take her to the ER vet because they really don’t do anything but charge you half an arm and leg! I am going to call the vet on Monday –Just looking to see if anyone else has went through this with their dog.

Answer by There is no cure for Ignorance!Call a Vet!
Your dog is not dying just showing her age and that is a good age sounds like she has some kind of medical problem that is undetected get her checked out by a vet being deaf probably does not help her but until you get her checked out by a vet you wont know if anything is seriously wrong with her .

Question by Bullmastiff_Boxer_lover: Dog dying of lung cancer?? my coworker is a smoker, and smoked around her dog for years and years, and now?
the dog is dying of lung cancer due to 2nd hand smoke. she needs to euthanize him, he is just coughing way too much, and is suffering. i can’t even look at her or talk to her, because she is keeping him alive, and i went and visited the dog before and he is just suffering. poor baby.

anyway, please spread the word, that 2nd hand smoke kills dogs too. if you know a smoker or if you are a smoker don’t smoke around your dogs.

did you know that?? i didn’t till a month ago.
to pope the person that answered between Shanna and Mandy…..

you sound upset at my question, is it possibly because your dog died because you smoked around it???

FYI im not a vet, and never claimed to be……and just so you know…….how can anyone let a dog suffer?
Guess what, I am a smoker, and NEVER smoke around my dogs.

Best answer:

Answer by cinney
I guess it’s no surprise since it harms humans too. Too bad people don’t think about pets around when they smoke. I used to smoke but never smoked in any house I lived in. It’s also sad that since this is terminal for the dog that she’s letting it suffer. Why not put the poor thing out of its suffering. Shame on her!
