Question by Jifferson Van MacScottright: How can I kick my sister out of my Mom’s house in Texas?
My mother had a stroke two years ago. My wife, daughter, and I were living there for about two weeks before her stroke because we moved out of the house we were living in abruptly and needed somewhere to stay temporarily. A few weeks after my mom’s stroke, my older sister (45 yrs) wanted to move in the house. She had been wanting to live there for a while but my mom wouldn’t let her come live with her for various reasons. She had lived with her before but moved out so she could have privacy with her husband. So now, I’m not able to buy a house and I want to live at my mom’s house so I can save to buy my own house. I would actually like to live there and make the house a home for my wife and daughter. I wouldn’t have moved out if my sister wouldn’t have brought her dog and cat over to my mom’s house. My daughter has sever allergies to cats and dogs. She actually developed asthma symptoms while we were living there with my sister for the six month time period. My sister also didn’t get along with my wife and they would argue and maintain a constant level of tension keeping me in the middle. My sister has a drinking problem and has friends over that are ex cons or crack heads or former crack heads and I didn’t want them around my family. So we moved out and my sister got rid of most of my mom’s furniture and other belongings, and put a lot of her personal pictures etc in the attic for storage. She basically moved her stuff in and made the house her own. She pays on the loan and taxes, which is only about 30k on a 300k property that my family had purchased back in the 60s. Once that loan is paid off, the house will be own free and clear except for the debt for my mother’s care. My mom is currently living in a nursing home using Medicare and Medicaid. Texas has a program where they can reclaim the cost of Medicaid expenses when my mother dies. There are some exceptions such as an unmarried child living at the home. My sister is legally married, but separated from her husband. Her husband left her for another woman that he got pregnant. She is staying on his insurance because she has had two episodes of lymphoma and needed chemotherapy treatments. So I’m in a situation where my sister doesn’t want me to live with her because of my wife and I don’t want to live with her because of her life style and we both want to live at my mom’s house because it is low cost living in a nice place. What can I do?

Sell the house, split the proceeds (after paying for Mom’s care).

Question by Meagan J: Can there be different types of cancer inside one house?
I have my Grandparents, my uncle, my aunt, and the dog in one house, 4 out of the 5 had/have cancer. But, there all different types: thyroid, Hodgkin lymphoma, skin, and luekemia. Is this unusual?

Some families are more genetically prone to cancer than others (dog’s cancer is a coincidence). This just means that you should never skip your yearly pap-smear after the age of 18. You should also have a mammogram at 38 (to use as a base) and then one every year after that. You should never smoke or drink alcohol (both increase cancer risk– eventhough red wine is ok for heart disease it’s bad for cancer) and make sure you discuss non-hormonal options for birth control when you’re ready for that.
All that said, if you have a basement where you live, there is a test sold in Home Depot and Lowe’s called a Radon Test. It’s about $ 20 and you leave it in the basement for a day or 2 and it will tell you if your home has a Radon problem. Radon is a radio-active gas known to increse risk of cancer by a HUGE margin. It’s easy to find out and worth the $ 20. If your home does have a high Radon problem it only costs a few hundred bucks to get it fixed which is much less money than the medical bills it can cause later.
Good luck.

Question by Capecodderbon: Could my cat catch a disease from a new dog in the house?
My cat is 17 years old and a completely indoor cat. He was raised with a dog who was older and died a few years ago. The cat’s overall health is good, however we are not revaccinating him as he had a bad reaction to some of the vaccines (that lump that could turn into cancer at injection site for feluke and rabies) and vomitting etc.
If we got a young dog from a shelter who’s had all his shots, could he pass anything fatal onto my cat?
I think the dog to add some more interest to my cat’s life and I think he’d love another canine brother or sister, but if rescuing a dog from a shelter could kill my cat, I don’t want to risk it.

The only thing the dog may give the cat is fleas. Usually dogs will get worms from cats because they eat infected feces (your cat undoubtedly does NOT have worms if he’s strictly indoors). So the dog won’t give your old boy anything but some hyper shenanigans maybe.

Question by canereadtu: My dog with cancer is pooping all around the house and refuses treats?
The vet just told my parents to take him to the hospital to be put on an IV – I had thought this was normal behavior for a dog with cancer. Can anyone explain?

Best answer:

Answer by Becky
More than likely it’s normal, but still requires medical treatment. He may be dehydrating and the vet most likely wants to administer fluids to rehydrate, as well as meds that may make your dog feel better and/or treat the cancer.
I’m so sorry your dog is sick.
