Question by sjlawson12: Bone Marrow involvement with bone cancer?
My grandmother was diagnosed with bone cancer two years ago this past fall (unsure if osteosarcoma?) – recent blood counts have come back troublingly low, oncologist concerned that she’s suffer metastisis to bone marrow. Is anyone aware of the general time frame associated with this progression? The only information I can find re: bone marrow cancer relates to non-hodgkins lymphoma, multiple myeloma, etc. Only educated answers, please.

Thanks in advance… just trying to prepare myself more thoroughly for the inevitable.
I appreciate the other answers here, and I realize people are only trying to help, but I’m looking for medical opinions and advice. Thanks anyway.

I think only a doctor could estimate as each patient is individual, but then again even Doctors are sometimes way off.

My Grandma was diagnosed with intestional cancer and given 6 weeks to live. She lived 2 years after that and passed away just last summer.

Cancer is so tricky and hard and varies from patient to patient.

Just make sure you get to spend the time with her that you can now and ask her the things you want to know about and have her tell you the stories that you would like to hear.

Let her teach you something, even if it is knitting that she wants to teach you, even if you hate it, just do it for her, you will be glad you did. Just make sure you get whatever you can in so that you will not regret the time you didnt take.

She has seen so much and has so much wisdom.

I know its hard because you love her and its hard to see someone you love suffer.

I sincerely remember this story for 2 reasons, 1: I am from Washington State and it was a state wide story, and 2: I am an animal lover :) Last I heard the dog has recovered and is doing well (I did a little research since I haven’t heard much lately about Comet). I found a website that listed that Comet is very much alive and is doing well. Here’s the website: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7417688/

Question by jackie: My dog ill with symptoms of canine leukemia, blood and bone marrow show no cancer, tic test neg. what to do?
My dog a shepard/great dane mix 5 years old developed symtoms of canine leukemia over a 48 hour period. Bone marrow test and bloodwork show no cancer cells however but some bone marrow damage and very low white count. Tic test negative. Two local vets are baffled. He remains quite ill, is on antibiotics. Any suggestions or similar cases. Help!

I found this page that may help you with some answers…

WBC is an abbreviation for white blood cell count. These cells help fight infection and respond when an area of the body becomes inflamed. Elevated white blood cell counts indicate infection, inflammation and some forms of cancer or leukemia. Low white blood cells counts can indicate viral infections, bone marrow abnormalities or overwhelming infections and sepsis (blood poisoning). In this situation, the white blood cells are concentrated in the area of infection and are not circulating in the blood, resulting in a low count.

What do you think? Answer below!

Any surgical/medical vets or vet techs out there? My dog has consistently run a hematocrit in the low to mid-teens for the past 6 weeks, has been on Pred for the entire time and has shown no improvement in the hematology but her behavior has seemed to improve (a little more energy, gums not quite as pale). Vet is suggesting the next step is a bone marrow aspirate to rule out/in possible cancers, etc.

Just wondering how much we’re looking at for this painful procedure for my 2 1/2 year old American Eskimo girl (shelter dog) and what it’s going to tell us that will provide any kind of positive diagnosis/prognosis. Thanks!
