Question by Tommy12oz: Are 10 Chemo treatments for a dog too much?
Our dog had Osteosarcoma and we had his front paw amputated and had 6 rounds of Chemo treatment.

Now after the 6th treatment the Dr says hes handling it well and we should keep giving him more..

It total we have spent $ 11,000! on the diagnosis, surgery and 6 rounds of Chemo… not too mention the extra 150 dollars yesterday on blood work to find out hes handling the treatments well.

Before we proceed I will talk to the DR ask all my questions, but in general I feel like I am being taken advantage of. What are 4 more rounds of Chemo going to do that 6 did not? Is this too much?

Do we just keep going till he does not handle it well? That sounds absurd at $ 850 a shot.

Question by Cat: How much did you pay for your dog’s mammry tumor (brest cancer) surgery?
I just want a pre-estimate before I go get my dog checked up.
I’m pretty positive there’s a node on her upper chest. Pray for my dog (Doggie) please.

Question by Christine: Taste of the wild too much protein for nomal dogs?
I am currently feeding Blue Buffalo to my dogs and requested some Taste of the wild food for my grandmas dog…they are also sending me samples but I noticed this food has 32% min protein where what they are currently eating has 24% min . I do not know if the increase in proten is a good thing or if it is more for a very active dog which mine and grandmas (12 year old dog with cancer) would not be considered.

Thank you

It’s an Iams brand which I am not fond of.

I put my dogs on Innova at one point and also Wellness – even with a long transition, they ended up with terrible gas and diarrhea. It turned out the protein content of those foods was too high for them. I switched to California Natural – made by same company as Innova but lower protein – and the problem resolved. This is not uncommon.

My feeling is that unless your dog is a high energy working dog expending a lot of calories a day, 32% is too high.

I had a lung resection in 1980 & was pretty sore after but recovered quickly. They will give you enough pain relief to make it not too bad.
good luck

Question by John H: how much does it cost to treat dog’s testicular cancer?

This would be something to discuss with your Vet or the Oncologist Specialist. Price would vary greatly and it would also depend it the cancer has spread to other organs, glands or bones. Once again, another reason to neuter pet quality animals. I’m sorry for you, though.

Unless you happen to have one of the few surgeons who can do this laparoscopicly it is pretty painful, as they have to spread your ribs to get to the lungs.

Question by Miranda E: Has anyone’s Dog had to have radiation treatment? If so, how much was it?
Our pit bull has a grade 2 mast cell tumor on his belly. He’s not a candidate to surgery and has been recommended to have radiation treatment. We were quotes 7,000 dollars + 2,000 for a C scan, for this treatment. After looking around online I feel that we were quoted too high. Should we get a 2nd opinion? Or does this sounds like the right amount. Has anyone experienced this? Thanks in advance

Do a search for Vets that use Sr-90 (Strontium-90) to treat tumors. At least get a second opinion.

Question by Camille S: How much does it usually cost for cancer treatment in dogs? Approx 5k, 10k, 15k?
I am purchasing vet insurance with cancer coverage but do not know a realistic amount of what cancer really cost.

Best answer:

Answer by T J
Call your vet and ask them, but I would assume it would depend on (1) breed of dog, (2) type of cancer, and (3) how advanced it is. My guess would be $ 5k maybe up to $ 10k, but call them and ask them for a range.

My dog (and Aussie) has been diagnosed with luxating patella on both his back legs.. they roughly guessed 1500 – 2000 dollars.(for each surgery)

now it may have been close to 7 years ago that my maltese Mikey (may he rest in peace) had a knee surgery and it was 700, and the hip surgery he had 4 years ago was only 400

I can’t believe the price would be almost double? Since the surgery on the small dog is actually harder to do than on a big dog. (they told me that at the time, that it was difficult on his little small bones and there was a possibility I could end up with a three legged dog depending on how bad the knee actually was)

(FYI, Mikey’s last surgery (the hip surgery) aggrivated his cancer (that they had found about 5 years earlier) and it wasn’t long after recovery I had to have him put to sleep :( )
OH.. I forgot the most important part..
hearing “the best vets” charge more..
My vet told me ” this guy isn’t BOARD CERTIFIED, but he’s been doing all her surgery @ her clinic for 11 years”

Why would she think I would let a NON BOARD CERTIFIED SURGEON even work on my baby??
