Question by Jethro: Is it possible to develop a tolerance to fentanyl patches?
I’ve recently started on these for bone pain, and once I got over the initial dizziness they have been a godsend, but I do still feel pain. My understanding is that fentanyl is fairly strong, and that we will have to monitor the usage carefully because there is a possibility that my breathing will become compromised in the future (both from my cancer, and from the fent patches). I absolutely trust my doctors to make right call, I’m just worried that I’ll become tolerant of fentanyl and that it won’t work anymore… because what’s next? Is there room to move with it? I wear one 100 mcg/h patch and one 25 mcg/h one. I’m also on dilaudid to sleep.

I should probably add that I’m not a random drug addict, have been in and out of treatment for osteosarcoma since I was 14, have developed a tolerance to opiates, and generally don’t react well to morphine

People very commonly develop tolerance to opiates.
We call this tachyphylaxis.
It is simply a matter of using ever increasing doses to achieve the same effect.
You oncologist must know this and adjust your medication appropriately.

Question by Katie Rose: is it possible cancer?
For years my knee would bother me, I broke my ankle when I was 11. I am 14 now. and My knee swells up whenever I do something, it aches, hurts, cracks and it bothers me. I was reading a book and it talked about osteosarcoma and i googled it and now I am scared because I think I could possibly have it. I don’t want to tell me parents because they are the type that won’t care. They will just say, “Oh your growing.” Psh please.

Answer by GinnyBRock
There’s always a possibility, unlikely, but you need to let your parents know and go see a doctor, so you can have peace of mind either way. You will only give yourself undue worry if you spend too much time on the internet and in books, looking up your symptoms. Show your parents your knee when it’s swollen. I am sure that they wont fob you off if you are persistent with them.

I had osteosarcoma when i was 16. I know it can be hard to convince your parents that there is a problem when you’re young. Just tell them that you don’t want to muck around with your health. If you show them that you have a genuine concern for your wellbeing then they’d be negligent to not take you to the doctor.

Question by peace_love_music: Is it possible to get bone cancer in your ankle?
I was supposedly diagnosed with a tarsal coalition (fusion of two bones in my ankle) about a year and a half ago after repeated sprains and twists of my ankle. I have treated that condition with a cortisone injection, and it is now fine and painfree. However, over the last year, there has been a lump right on the inside of my ankle that seems to be getting slowly larger. It is mildly painful when I apply pressure to it and in the morning, and it now measures about 2 to 2.5 cm across the top of the lump. Is there a possibility it could be a type of bone cancer? Is it even possible to get cancer in your ankle? Thanks for any help and advice, I’m somewhat paranoid because one of my close friends has osteosarcoma. Have a great day.
To answer your questions, the lump is stationary. I haven’t been to the doctor yet because my surgeon/orthopedist didn’t seem to think anything was wrong when they did my injection about three and a half weeks ago. Is it worth it to get more x-rays, because the last x-rays they did were in June of 2008?

Answer by Matante
Bone cancer could happen to any bone, but there are much likelier causes for a lump to appear on a joint. You had quite a lot of inflammation in that area before, the joint could have a problem again, si lets go to the doctor and make sure it’s not something that could lead to arthritis or other painful conditions, and while he’s at it, he’ll see it if it looks like a cancer, but it shouldn’t be your main concern now.

Question by Erika: Is is possible that a pollen could poison my dog?
We have a 10 month old Beagle puppy who recently started getting sick. She stopped eating, started drinking a lot of water (and urinating in turn) and became less active and sluggish. After a couple of days, we took her to the vet where we got a blood test and found out her calcium was at 17. We know anything over 12/13 is dangerous, so we went through the possibilities of how she could have gotten sick.

After a week of blood tests, we’ve been able to rule out most of the common things (Addison’s she tested negative for, parathyroid and lymphoma could still be possibilities but are extremely rare at her age). My husband noticed today that he has been working at someplace with Day Blooming Jessamine plants all over, which is a known poison for dogs to ingest, http://www.petplace.com/dogs/hypercalcemia-in-dogs/page2.aspx .

Our puppy is really friendly and licks him a lot, so we were wondering if there was a possibility that the pollen got on him and her licking it off could be enough to poison her?

I figure it’s a long shot, but if it’s something that simple we could put up preventative measures.
She hasn’t been sneezing, so allergies hasn’t come up at all with my vet.

He hasn’t had any of the flower petals on him coming home, so I don’t know of any other exposure she’s had to the flowers, since she’s never outside alone.

Our vet has been collaborating with all the vets at his facility and specialists from a veterinary research institute nearby.

We’re all very stumped!
She has only been pooping when she’s actually eaten, and rarely as it is, the consistency has been normal with no blood. Although I will bring up the whipworm idea to my vet today, since it says there’s a possibility of it mimicking Addison’s disease. Thank you for another idea to bring up to him!

She’s a purebred bought from a breeder. The only information they could give us to sicknesses in the bloodline is her mother having hypocalcemia with a previous litter.

Question by Ellie Brown: Is it possible that I have osteosarcoma?
Alright, it’ll be a bit long, but i’ll start from the beginning. I am a 13 year old girl, who grew 5 inches this year.

Around three month ago, I noticed a small, dime-sized bump on the inside side of my shin, about halfway down. I asked the doctor about, and they said not to worry, it was just my bone.

It has slowly gotten much, much worse. It is now about one inch wide, and three inches long. It is a bit hard to see, but is easily felt. It is very tender and firm. It didn’t hurt at all in the beginning, but has gotten worse over the weeks, and now I (who never cries) am holding back tears. It mainly hurts at the end of the day, but a bit if I do long sessions of extreme exercise. It has woken me up in awful pain about 4 times since last tuesday.

We went to get an MRI three weeks ago, and my orthopedist said it was scar tissue. And ordered me not to ride. (I competitively ride horses nearly every day). I came back a week later, and it had gotten bigger.

He sent me to a physical therapist, stumped. She believes I have crooked feet, and that is putting tension on my shin. I have had no sports and have had to wear an ice pack bandaged to my leg for 20 min a day. I also do these stretches she recommended. If anything, it has gotten worse. The ice has not helped the swelling and I am in so much pain.

What are the chances that I have Osteosarcoma?

Thanks

Best answer:

Answer by Steve K
You have already been to your own doctor, had an MRI done and seen a specialist. They told you it was not cancer. Trust their diagnosis they know what they are talking about all that schooling they went through, counts for something. I’m sure they would not want to misdiagnosis you and take a chance on legal repercussions.

Question by Bla Bla: Dog was given a few months to live, how should I make her as comfortable as possible?
I posted earlier. My dog was diagnosed with lymphoma today (all her glands). She is ten years old. Chemotherapy is out of the question, she was given a shot i believe with steroids.

At this point she is kind of active, the medication has made her a bit sluggish. How can I make her last days, comfortable and enjoyable. I fear walking her to much. She loves rides in the car.

Food and family are the most important things to most dogs.
I suggest busting out bacon, prosciutto, and all sorts of tasty things for her

Question by Jeffersons: Dog with possible lymphoma?
My Boxer started with small masses or enlarged submandibular lymph nodes earlier this week. Over the course of the week, the masses or lymph nodes are 3 times the size. She has been lethargic and not eating very well.

I have a feeling this is cancer, however I want to believe this could also turn out to be an infection. She has an appointment tomorrow with her vet.

Any info or stories would be helpful.

Thanks!

PS: I have read a lot online and in the books I have. I know a lot going into this but want some feedback. Thanks again.

Answer by Dale A
I agree with you… this would worry me too. Is there anything that might point more towards infection (bad teeth? run in with a porcupine? other traumatic incident?)

Can you tell me more about her? How old? Any other medical problems that you know about?

The vet will likely do a fine needle aspirate of the masses. This involves sticking a needle in them, drawing off some cells, and looking at them under a microscope. The simplistic interpretation of what they are looking for is as follows:
If the involved cells all look pretty much the same, then its likely an infection (lymph nodes proliferate via clonal expansion to fight off infection), if they look ‘weird’ and different from each other, then its likely a tumour.

I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for her.

Dale

Question by Tanner Johnson: is it possible i have osteosarcoma cancer? please help.?
okay so i have had on and off pain in my knee mainly at night sometimes during the day. It gets very swollen and it hurts to bend and walk so i limp around alot i did some researching and came across osteosarcoma. I know its not very likely but im exploring all the possibilities i am 15 year old girl. I get knee pains most frequent in my right knee and it KILLS i get other pains in my bones at night but not nearly as much. Every once and a while I will get a killer pain in my side and it hurts to breathe. I want to ask others for opionions before making a fake warning of osteosarcoma to my mother. Its usually after I do a physical activity that my knee starts to hurt. Please give me any insights…

Best answer:

Answer by cynica
What you are experiencing could be caused by many different things. Usually people who have bone cancer can feel a distinct hard lump on the bone that is affected. Anyway I suggest you tell your mum that your knee is sore and have a doctor take a look at it. I doubt it would be something too serious.
