I am so sorry. My GSD died in September 2009 with cancer of the spleen. If your dog has had a op and a biopsy which proves this, she has a problem.

My dog was referred to a specialist when it was suspected that she had a splenetic problem. Before my dog had her op, I told the vet that if it was obvious that she had cancer of the spleen that she should be PTS without waiting for the biopsy results. When I collected my beloved dog, the vet said that he was 99.9% convinced that she had cancer. He allowed her to wake up from the op because he was a charlatan and he wanted to be paid for extensive surgery.

Because I had investigated this on the Internet, I knew that she could have an internal bleed. This happened just eighteen days after her op, her limbs became cold, I took her to my usual vet and she was PTS.

For now, if you feel that you keep her happy, give her several tiny meals a day. Her spleen will have swollen, consequently she cannot cope with large meals. I cooked my dog a variety of things, I just wanted her to eat and I gave her warmed food.

Due to the function of the spleen, cancer can spread very quickly to other organs, that’s why they have internal bleeds. If you think that she is declining and there is evidence of problems. I hope that you will have the strength to end her life. Do this sooner than later if you cannot stay with her for twenty four hours a day.

I am sorry for both you and your dog. Email me if you think that I can help, you have a long hill to climb. Take care

Question by Rachel: Signs of a dying dog?
I have read the signs of a dying dog…. She has some signs but not all…looking for some input

My Choc Lab is 12 ½ years old. Her back hips have been bad for a while now. However, now she has a very hard time going to steps – when she goes up them she hops. She eats just not much (she has lost weight over the past few weeks) Now a 2 quart food bowl full will last her up to 3 to 5 days!! She does drink all the time. She has no bowel/potty problems. She does get confused easy and last week we learned she is 100% deaf. Last night her right shoulder went out from yesterday and today her shoulder has gone out 4 times. This week she also has started panting when the house is cold…she even pants when she has done nothing to make her hot. She also lays in one spot most of her day and today she has been following me around like a lost puppy dog. She even followed me to the bathroom. She had bone cancer a year ago and we amputated her toe… I fear the time is near for our Millie – I really don’t want to take her to the ER vet because they really don’t do anything but charge you half an arm and leg! I am going to call the vet on Monday –Just looking to see if anyone else has went through this with their dog.

Answer by There is no cure for Ignorance!Call a Vet!
Your dog is not dying just showing her age and that is a good age sounds like she has some kind of medical problem that is undetected get her checked out by a vet being deaf probably does not help her but until you get her checked out by a vet you wont know if anything is seriously wrong with her .

Question by Michelle: Does my dog have a rash or signs for cancer?
My dog Spyke is about 7-years old. A month ago Spyke developed a red discoloration around his belly. It looks like a red rash with huge round bumps (about 2 centimeters). Spyke keeps licking his infection and keeps scratching it with his leg. He is licking the area so much that his hair has fallen out. Can this be a rash or some sort of cancer? I need your help, please!

If shes a big dog the getting up could just be her hips hurting? But if you are really concerned contact your local humane society and ask them for any organizations in the area that help animal owners with low income. Most cities have at least on place that will help with very little or no cost to you. I hope that helped you.

Question by Amanda [Taylor.]: does anyone know the signs of ovarian cancer in dogs?
…my mom thinks that my 9-year old yellow lab might have ovarian cancer. she is obviously not a young dog anymore, and she doesnt get to run very much. we have a very small yard and live in the middle of a park with alot of other dogs, so she cant be outside alot by herself. she is overweight, but she is on diet control food. she is starting to trip alot, and she has thrown up a few times within december and january. she isn’t spayed. can anyone give me any symptoms at all? could it be that she just isnt getting enough exercise?
thanks in advance.
thanks, but it is a very big and good reason why i cannot let her out.
shes my mom’s dog, i have my own dog to take care of.
i live on a main road, in a park and next to a tourist attraction. if i let her out, i have to go with her, not just let her out. shes almost gotten hit by cars even with a fence around the yard.
she is taken to the vet regularly, though.
she deff doesnt have heartworm.

I would jump to just reg old age, or heart worms, or infection before I would even think of cancer, or even ovarian to be specific.

Take the dog to the vet.

Question by I ♥ TM: What are the signs of cancer in dogs?
My 12 year old Rottweiler had a tumor removed from her leg, but I couldn’t afford to get it biopsied. I’d like to know the signs of cancer, in case it was.

Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Nikole S
Few words in the English language cause the instant dread of the word cancer. In dogs, cancer is the leading cause of death, and it’s all the more heartbreaking because it remains a complex disease for which we often have little or no insight into the cause. In a time of huge leaps forward in cancer treatment, one reason cancer prevails as the leading cause of death is perhaps a surprising one: Because our dogs are so much better cared for today, they are living longer. Older dogs become more susceptible to such diseases of old age as tumors.

Before anyone says it – yes I have an apt with the vet tomorrow. Hopefully the vet will be able to help.

She had a mast cell tumor removed in October, biopsied as Stage 2, very clean edges so they believe they got the whole tumor. The vet said that treatment options included steroids, chemo & radiation… I asked about side effects and when he started listing them off I said NO. I have no desire to make my sweetheart of a dog suffer, just so I can selfishly keep her in my life for a few more months. What would her quality of life be? What would she want me to do?

Moving along… the incision heeled, I changed her diet to a homemade anti-cancer diet. My thought was if the cancer hasn’t spread then the diet should help keep it from spreading and if the cancer has spread the diet will slow or stop the cancer from growing (these are scientifically proven facts here… which I have extensively researched and read about, so don’t bother if your going to criticize me).

She has been doing just fine… still plays ball as well as ever, gets into the same trouble, chews the same bones and so on. Today I thought… something just doesn’t look right so I investigated further. The pads on her paws that are normally pink look white. Her gums look whiter than usual, same goes for the inside of her eyelids. So my best guess, semi educated… she is anemic. Mast cells can morph and cause bone cancer which would explain the anemia.

I don’t want my dog to suffer, and I am going to go to the vet and see what he says… and what I can do for her. She still isn’t showing any signs of being sick. What should I watch for that would mean she is getting sick or sicker. She’s still eating & drinking, runs around etc. What are the signs that she is suffering? How do I tell when it is time to let her go in peace?

This is a serious topic and I am very emotionally fragile right now so I AM BEGGING YOU… ONLY HELPFUL, KIND AND USEFUL INFORMATION PLEASE!

Can anyone tell me the difference between early signs of bone cancer vs arthritis. My dog has arthritis probably diagnosed a year ago, he is 12 yrs old. But my dog sometimes I feel like he is in pain but he is not limping just struggling to go up the stairs. His appetite is great, weight is perfect, lymph-nodes are perfect. So I am 99% percent sure it is arthritis however I never did a x-ray. He had a chess x-ay 3months ago and his vet said his lungs looks amazing especially for his age. Blood work came out great too. But sometimes I see him struggling and it worries me. He is getting supplements for his arthritis but I just want to know what differences would I see if it did happen to be cancer in the bones (i know the obvious but what about the early signs again vs arthritis). Correct me if I am wrong but the early signs of bone cancer seems a bit similar to arthritis to me. Most of his struggles is in the mornings and night he does struggle to get up on the wood floors. Oh and on the chess x-ray she was able to see the arthritis on his spine. His vet feels it is not what I fear because he would be in so much more pain. Also I feel like he would of had full out cancer by now since it has been a year probably longer. Can anyone shed some light on this?
thank you
