Before taking to the vet. Last day! Diagnosed with mammarian cancer/tumor in her abdomen.

Life can be rough. Especially to a young teenage dog named Lilly. Lilly gets bullied by her piers at her high school because they think she’s a ‘nerd’. Lilly sadly gets sick (from what?) and later finds out she has lung cancer, which can be deadly. This is the story about her life in her friend’s eyes: Cloe. Question by ANDREW S: Putting My dog to sleep when?
Max our golden retriever is 11 years old. For a few months he has been panting.he had his annual vets examination and was said to be pretty fit for his age. He always been full of beans and a great friend, Two weeks ago we were out walking and I sensed he was struggling. I made him stop and he collapsed in front of me. I sat with him in the woods and eventually picked him up and carried him some way home. he weighed 44kg hes a big dog.
We took him to the vets and he had an xray. he has always been stressed going to the vets. They rang me later that day to tell me he has several massess in his chest cavity and his lungs looked in bad shape. They told me he was not very well after the anasthetic. and they were worried about him. they gave him a durectic to remove the fluid off his chest. we went to see him that night and he did look ill. He has struggled with a weak back end for a few years, but he could not stand up and was on oxygen. they kept him in that night I got a call the next day to say he was a bit better. The vet told us that they thought he had no more than a month left she gave us some tablets to help his breathing and an antibiotic to stave off infections he has been on these since… We brought him home and for the first day he was really ill. the second day he was more or less abck to his usual self. playfull and eating like a horse. His breathing is not so good but his gums were nice and pink. he has to breathe fast in order to get the air he needs. but he seemed to be coping. On thursday 11th November he was eating as usual if not being a bit picky as we were spoiling him rotten giving him whatever he wanted. Friday night was another matter. he was up pacing and wanting to go out all the time. we have been sleeping downstairs with him to be on hand. he did not settle. we brought the vet out to him on saturday morning. we were concerned the cancers were blocking his bladder and he could not have a wee.
When the vets came he was a bouncy as ever.. bringing them toys and quite bright. She explained he had a lot of fluid on his chest and around the tumours. she gave him another durectic and she chased him round the garden to make sure he was actually having a wee which he was. That night he would not eat. but when we had a couple of friends round that same nigh he had lots of treats. You could tell he was not right and his backend kept slumping down. but he was bright enough. He looked a bit tired after the fussing so we made him laydown. He had another dose of the durectic and we had another sleepless night and he wanted to go out every hour for a wee. His back end is really weak and hes having trouble keeping himself in position white weeing or trying to poo. This morning he showed no real interest in anything. He has got to be starving. he is drinking but we can only get bits ot treats in him. It took us a while to get his tablets down, For most of today he has lain there sleeping. hes not wagging his tail and he looks sad. each time he has gone out you can see he is struggling to hold himself up when weeing. Its distressing for him and us. Tonight he would not eat. we got little bits in him but nothing more. He will still have a little milky bone but thats it. he normally goes with me for his walk.. a much shorter walk that is as he like to do his poo in the woods. He could not go during the day today as he was sleeping and showed no interest. He asked to go out at about 5 oclock. he was slowly pacing round the garden but could not settle on a spot. I asked him if he wanted to go just into the woods.. he did and followed me down. he eventually did a poo but it was dioreaha.. He was groaning in pain as he tried to squat.. it was awful to see him.. he got up and then his back end collapsed again and he just lay there gasping. I got him up and we managed the 15 yards back to the house.. his back end went again on the drive and his breathing was awful.. he then threw up.. he looked awful. we cleaned him up and he had a drink hes now in the lounge asleep he looks peaceful.. I know his prognosis is not good so I rang the vet. She was not much use. I have this horrible desision to make and I need some help and reassureance. I am prepared for his dying. I even have his coffin ready and have spent today digging a large hole in the garden on the spot he likes to site. I know its going to happen I just cannot say those final words.. ‘it’s time to say goodbye..’ each time i do the tears well up and I am a wreck.
Help..

DONT DO IT!

I know you want to put him out of his misery, but if he IS in such bad shape, let him spend his last days in peace and happiness with you, don’t get him killed. I am against it.

Question by : I got a ticket when I took my dog to be put to sleep…?
We had a 11.5 year old mix pit. This was our first dog and we loved him a lot. He was not our pet but a member of a family. He started changing his eating habits the beginning of this year. He wasn’t eating much and was laying around most of the time. Little by little he started losing weight. We bought him medicine, vitamins and throughout the past months and we also gave him pedialyte to see if it would help. And for most of the time it did. He was fine for some weeks then he wouldn’t want to eat again. We didnt have enough money to take him to a vet but we tried everything we could. Even bought a medicine that a vet reccomended, thinking it was a problem with his stomach. It is now august and our dog lost sight of one eye and he is very skinny. (you can see his bones) His attitude remained the same (not as playful) but as the lovable dog he has always been. We finally took him to a vet and we were told it looks like he has liver cancer and that there is nothing we can do. The vet reccomended we put him to sleep. They were going to charge us at this vet almost $ 200 to provide this service. I asked around and found that the Pima Animal Control Center in my city provides this service for only $ 15. So we took him there. When my mother arrived to the center the nurses were in shock and took him right away. They ended up giving my mother a ticket for cruelty and neglect. We did what we could to take care of our dog. Unfortunately, both my parents are in their late 50s and unemployed. My brother and I helped with the cost of the vet and medication as we could as both of us are also in a very tight financial situation. My mom is now also worry about this citation and depressed about losing our dog. She has diabetes and this situation is not helping her health. She cries everyday. I am not exaggerating when I say she treated him like one of us. Like a baby and now she has to deal with this situation of going to court. Like I said this was our first dog in our family and maybe we were not as educated on animal laws as we should have but one thing is for sure we did not have any cruelty against our dog. He was loved and care for at all times. He always had love, food, water and shelter as he slept inside our home. Both my parents loved him like a another son.

What can we do? The ticket shows it is criminal and we do not have money to pay a fine? Does anyone have an idea of what we can do or how much the fine will be?
jtexas: Thank you so much this is a great suggestion. I will get on it right away.

The trouble is, in the eyes of animal control, not providing actual vet treatment is a crime, as far as they’re concerned not being able to afford it isn’t an excuse, they don’t have much sympathy when it comes to financial situations.

They should have left a contact name of whoever was dealing with this case, call them and speak to them and explain the financial situation and find out what kind of fine they were wanting to charge.

All the animal control people saw was a painfully skinny dog and a family who haven’t provided proper vet treatment, regardless of treatments you did get for him outside of a vet surgery.

Question by Stephanie B: when is the right time to put my dog to sleep?
i have 2 rotts one is 6 and 7. the 6 yr old was diagnosed w/bone cancer in her rt shoulder almost a month ago. i believe it spread to her lungs. she coughs & hacks all the time now. her behavior has changed so quickley in the last couple of wks. she doesn’t want to walk much anymore more & when she does, she makes a horrible sound like she is coughing up a lung. then she will have to stop for a long time for a break. she is way too heavy for me to carry im not sure what she ways now but she was 85-90lbs a month ago when i found out. i can barely get her to eat. usually just a few bites few times a day. last 2 nights have me seriously thinking of doing it w/the SOB. she is taking meloxicam. then she has good moments when her tail wags cuz she is happy to see me but anythin that gets her excited makes her start coughin. her happy moments make me think i should wait but im worried she is being strong for me & suffering. i THINK naturally it would be 1 wk maybe 2. what do i do??

Question by Love: Put my dog to sleep this morning :( ?
I’ve had my basset hound since I was 2 years old, and he would’ve been 14 in Feb. We found out this morning that he had bone cancer and it’s christmas eve. My dad wanted to wait but the vet MADE him put him down. I didn’t know we put him to sleep, cause my dad told me i’d make the final decisions, and my mom woke me up this morning and asked me if I wanted to say goodbye. I have another dog who’s going crazy with out her bestfriend. I’ve been crying all day, and I know he’s in a better place. I just can’t stop crying. I just miss my dog so much, I want him back. And I feel even worse about not being there with him when he was getting put down, and last time I saw him was at 2 in the morning and I gave him a kiss goodnight. I know i’m handling this pretty rough, but i’ve had him since I was a baby, and he was apart of my family and my bestfriend, in my eyes he was more then a dog. I feel probably worse than anything, and I keep thinking i’m hearing his bark. And today was the when I ate dinner I looked for him on the floor. I just really miss my dog. I don’t know what to do.
This happens to be the worst Christmas ever. And I have another dog who just keeps looking for him, and moping around. I just want my dog back.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I know the feeling of having to put a dog down. It’s honestly one of the worst feelings. I hope you and your family feel better. Things will be okay and I promise you won’t feel that absence forever.

Did the vet actually test for bone cancer, or did he just touch her leg? Pain could be caused by many other things besides cancer. Maybe it’s time for a new vet or another opinion?

Time will heal.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

Question by TG: When to put a dog to sleep?
I’d like any advice or stories about having to make the decision to put a dog to sleep. My little old man has lymphoma and had been going along just fine (since diagnosis over 3 months ago), but a few days ago did a complete 180. Now he can barely stand up and walk, is pretty distant, won’t wag his tail (even when I get home, which usually drives him crazy)…no emotion at all. I’ve been sleeping downstairs on the floor at night because he can’t get up or down stairs. I know the right thing to do, but I guess I’m just looking to see if anyone has been in a similar situation and waited long enough to see their dog get better for awhile. Thanks

it is time when their quality of life is the pits and or they are in pain. Mental or physical. Yes, it is time. Sorry.
